The Dark Side Meets the Bright Side

Okay, so we all know I'm depressed...we've established this much. I know depression. She has been my ill weather friend and sporadic companion for most of my earthly sojourn, and so I'm rehearsed enough to know that all those crappy, ugly, horrid feelings I'm feeling are not reality. But it is much like someone accidentally hurting you. Knowing they didn't do it on purpose doesn't make it hurt any less. Still, I am forcing myself out of my hermit cocoon where I prefer to seal myself up until I can see things with "real" eyes and offer the world something other than, well, crap. Today I am going to look at the bright side of things. They really don't look bright from here but you chemically-balanced friends of mine can appreciate it, and later I will to. Blessings of the day are as follows:

#1 I was cramming some junk into my cupboard to make my counters look clean before Harris' therapist got here and I stumbled across this

A KING-SIZED candy bar I hid from myself! Oh joy! Oh glee! I took this picture right away and so there's evidence it existed before I sent it straight to my grateful hips.

2. I was squeezing into some too tight jeans since all the ones that fit (this means two) lay dirty on the floor and I found a twenty dollar bill! Wish I could say I'd hid that from myself too but, no can do. No picture cuz that twenty was burnin' a hole in my painted on pocket!

3. I have read three books in the last two weeks! I swore off people mag. and the like. This is a HUGE deal for me!

Celebrity gossip+The Book of Mormon=Liz's year-round reading program

So I'm really proud of myself on this one! And the books were really good. Two fiction and one non. The non was a true story (obviously) about a woman whose only son dove into a shallow lake and broke his neck at the age of 17. It chronicled his life as a quadriplegic and I ate it up. I love stories of the bent but not broken....it's how I feel a lot of the time.

p.s. I know I have WAY more blessings than this but I'll save all that for my prayers.

I know one of the fiction books - what's the other one?

I think you are doing great if you can see candy and money as blessings. I know that sounds ridiculous, but when I am really down, I would probably see them as evidences of my failures. I thought you looked really great the 2 seconds I saw you today.

Love you!

I'm impressed. I couldn't come up with a list of blessings to save my life when I am depressed...

Way to look on the bright side. Finding a King Sized Candy bar & not a 5, not a 10, but a 20 dollar bill-- that's just bliss. Doesn't reading make you feel good? I've read two whole books in the past week, taking 24 hours or less to read each, & while I feel guilty for neglecting things (like my children), it feels good to immerse yourself in someone else's story, whether fiction or non. Good job Liz!

P.S. Did you look up the story on my creepy seminary teacher?

I'm so impressed that you are so good at looking at the bright side. When I'm depressed I only look down - I'm going to take a lesson from you and change that. You don't ever seem depressed when I see you - You are still functioning, girl!

Here's the dealio--no one ever thinks you're depressed b/c you always look San Frantastic! But even when you look really good in public, on the inside, life just feels really hard sometimes. Exactly like you said...doing everything with concrete boots! Getting out of the cocoon works for me, too. I'm happy to get out of the cocoon with you anyday!

I tell you what, I would have gone out and bought 20 other King-size candy bars with the money you found. Congrats on squeezing into tight jeans. That's only a dream for me.

I like your list and am glad that you found a bright side amidst the chaos of depression.

You are just plain awesome. You seem to have a knack for finding really great things you didn't know you had. You need to come to my house and find some great things I didn't know I had.

We want to come and visit in August. We miss you!

A candy bar and $20.00! I'll take it! I'm glad you are able to find blessings even through your trials. You are amazing, and I'm so glad to know you.

You are fantastic. I also occasionally come across twenty dollar bills in odd places, but not because I'm blessed or lucky--I'm just a downright slob. David says he doesn't care, but I'm just not quite sure he is seeing clearly yet......don't bust up his mirage, promise? Hopefully if the money keeps popping up in old pants, he won't mind too much.

I love stalking your blog. I'm ridiculously happy to have such gutsy fun honest real sisters for in-laws.

Uh, I just realized that "the money popping up in old pants" sounds obscurely risque....but I'm not quite sure how or what it would mean and I'm trying not to think about it, but I don't want you to think I'm disgusting intentionally. Overlook any supposed innuendo.

And if it makes me disgusting to think there MIGHT have been innuendo there......then I have no excuse. Please accept me as I am.

you must be doing better than you think to be able to keep up with this blog, count blessings, and just plain do anything productive when you are depressed! Depression to me= me doing nada.

Keep your head up. This too shall pass.
